The popularization of modern tennis is directly related to the emergence of open tennis tournaments in the late 1960s all over the world. Open tennis tournament is encouraged participation of players from all over the world and was not restricted either to graphically or skill wise. Anybody could participate in these tournaments and compete. In fact, during the initial years of open tennis tournaments, many amateurs successfully won on a regular basis. Open tennis tournaments are also credited for standardizing the rules and also the game play across the world.
Since the participation was not restricted to a geographical location people from all parts of the world participated in the open tournaments and learnt from each other. This also paved the way for the formation of a common organization of the regulation of the game in the world. This organization called ATP was formed in the early 1970s, primarily due to the emergence and popularity of open tennis tournaments in the world.
It also paved the way for many innovations in game play and also the equipment used for the sport of tennis. For example, Fiberglas rackets were experimented in open tennis tournaments and then were popularized throughout the world because of their effectiveness. Similarly the rules like tie-breakers, games per set etc, were standardized after experimentation in open tennis tournaments.
